linkfarming

I haven't been reading as much stuff, since I've been watching Lost (all done, finally). Also, 99% of everything is crap, so why would I inflict it on you?
Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Reading the last link right now. "Sociopathic idealized nerds collapse society because they don’t get enough hugs." =)

  2. I've read a couple articles on Americans' ignorance about religion, including their own, but I've also noticed it growing up. I'm not Roman Catholic, but in my high school I scored significantly higher on the Roman Catholic religion test than my Roman Catholic classmates. I couldn't fathom why someone would blindly follow a set of beliefs without knowing what they were. Now I understand that it's sometimes as simple as laziness.

  3. Well, the quick answer to that is that people don't really believe the things their religion says they're supposed to believe. =) I spent some time last year trying to understand Catholicism, for example, and why people are willing to share a label with what I view as a pretty reprehensible institution.

After talking with Catholic friends and doing some reading, I realized the tricky thing is that "Catholicism," "Catholics," and "the Catholic Church" are three very different things; and it's further muddied by the Catholic Church claiming to speak for and define Catholicism, and pretending that Catholics believe what the Church says they should believe. Instead, it's an ongoing dialogue and interchange among the three elements, Vatican II being the most drastic example.

Mostly, though, since I lack faith as it's usually understood, it's a mystery to me. =)
