2019 Booklist

Whatcha got for me, 2019?

  1. Lord of the Changing Winds - Rachel Neumeier.
  2. Accelerando - Charles Stross.
  3. Elantris - Brandon Sanderson.
  4. Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep - David K. Randall. Perhaps fittingly, a good before-bed book, which lasted a long time.
  5. Land of the Burning Sands - Rachel Neumeier.
  6. The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World From the Periodic Table of the Elements - Sam Kean.
  7. Law of the Broken Earth - Rachel Neumeier.
  8. The Fate of the Tearling - Erika Johansen.
  9. The Chinese Typewriter: A History - Thomas S. Mullaney. Did he just invent the word "technolinguistic"? Quite possibly. Was it necessary? Yep.
  10. Warbreaker - Brandon Sanderson.
  11. Storm Front - Jim Butcher. Enjoyable and thoroughly unchallenging.
  12. The Way of Kings - Stormlight Archive #1.
  13. Mistborn - Mistborn #1. Different series! Same multiverse.
  14. The Well of Ascension - Mistborn #2. Man, this one is grim.
  15. Words of Radiance - Brandon Sanderson. Stormlight #2.
  16. The Birth of Loud: Leo Fender, Les Paul, and the Guitar-Pioneering Rivalry That Shaped Rock 'N' Roll - Ian S. Port.
  17. Sacred Trash: The Lost and Found World of the Cairo Geniza - Adina Hoffman & Peter Cole.
  18. Slaughter-House Five - Kurt Vonnegut.
  19. The Hero of Ages - Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn #3--a solid ending.
  20. Tiamat's Wrath - James S.A. Corey. Delicious, like all the Expanse novels.
  21. The End of Empire: Attila the Hun & the Fall of Rome - Christopher Kelly. Thin, but well-done.
  22. Oathbringer - Brandon Sanderson. Stormlight #3. I thought this would have me done with his Cosmere novels, but no, there's a second Mistborn trilogy still.
  23. Fiddle: One Woman, Four Strings, and 8,000 Miles of Music - Vivian Wagner.
  24. The Consuming Fire - John Scalzi.
  25. The Tethered Mage - Melissa Caruso.
  26. The Pine Barrens - John McPhee.
  27. Lies Sleeping - Ben Aaronovitch. I missed that there'd been a new installment in the Rivers of London series! CHOMP.
  28. Fool Moon
  29. Grave Peril
  30. Summer Knight
  31. Death Masks - Jim Butcher.
  32. Codex - Lev Grossman. His first novel, before the magisterial Magicians trilogy. It has that "new author" smell.
  33. A Dead Djinn In Cairo - P. Djèlí Clark. Sadly, just a short story. :-(
  34. Artemis Awakening - Jane Lindskold.
  35. A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe - Alex White.
  36. Ninefox Gambit
  37. Raven Stratagem - Yoon Ha Lee.
  38. Blood Rites - Jim Butcher.
  39. Foundryside - Robert Jackson Bennett. Damn, he's good.
  40. A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy - Alex White.
  41. Revenant Gun - Yoon Ha Lee. Not a bad trilogy...sort of uneven, but creative and distinct.
  42. Chasing Aphrodite: The Hunt for Looted Antiquities at the World's Richest Museum - Jason Felch & Ralph Frammolino. The story of the Getty Museum's decades of buying looted antiquities. Just...wow.
  43. Consider Phlebas - Iain M. Banks. Spurred to re-read this for the only time in years by a conversation at work, I re-read the whole thing, and it is a bad book about an interesting milieu.
  44. Cannery Row - John Steinbeck. What an odd book. Nothing happens.
  45. The Iron Thorn - Caitlin Kittredge.
  46. Ilium - Dan Simmons.
  47. The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World - Steve Brusatte.
  48. Remnant Population - Elizabeth Moon.
  49. The Lost Book of Moses: The Hunt for the World's Oldest Bible - Chanan Tigay.
  50. A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent - Marie Brennan.
  51. The Truth
  52. Thief of Time
  53. Night Watch - Terry Pratchett. Feels like maybe Pratchett learned about his early-onset Alzheimer's, realized he had so many stories to tell, and cranked up the pace of the storytelling.
  54. The October Man - Ben Aaronovitch. A delicious Rivers of London novella.
  55. Monstrous Regiment
  56. Going Postal- Terry Pratchett.
  57. Minimum Wage Magic - Rachel Aaron.
  58. Thud! - Terry Pratchett.
  59. The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss. Woooow I forgot what a good book this was.

New Category: Audiobooks! Lots of free readings of public-domain works from Librivox. Although I realized I can get much higher-quality readings from the libraries.
  1. Practical Demonkeeping
  2. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove
  3. Island of the Sequined Love Nun - Christopher Moore.
  4. Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds - Brandon Sanderson. A trio of what are nominally novellas, although at Sanderson's lengths...
  5. A Dirty Job - Christopher Moore. One of his best, I think.
